TV Real Estate Agents - 07/24/10

How are they found and how are they selected? Do real estate agents want to be on TV?

We talked to several real estate agents who have appeared on HGTV's variety of real estate shows. And there are more of these shows growing by the second! Not that many years ago we sat next to Steve Edelman on a flight...we recognized him because he used to have a TV talk show which we watched and loved, but that is a whole different story….

Steve Edelman is the president of Edelman Productions, one of the largest real estate production companies involved in TV. Don't hound him for an audition, he doesn't do the casting.  But he is very, very good at what he does do and that's to create real estate shows for the insatiable.

Anyway, Steve was legal binder deep in real estate show notes and said that his production of shows was going to increase dramatically - just watch and see. And since this was a few years ago we believe he was right based on all the new choices.  And we love most of them.

They spring up overnight it seems: What's My House Worth, House Hunters (a standard fave) and the International version; Sleep on It (ah, don't care for it), Curb Appeal, Designed to Sell (these two are so nice - we met Lisa and Clive...very funny these two), National Open House, Homes across America (the host's voice! Amazing), Rate my Space and so on.

The real estate agents used in these shows are very real and very active in the industry.  They are cast after auditioning, typically through some kind of polished video tape. There is NO pay involved. None. Usually HGTV will give the agent their quick plug in the layered graphics on the show itself, a tiny thank you at the end and a link to your website on their website.

The agents we spoke to asked for anonymity because they want to be rehired.  We respect their privacy. They do not speak out about their experiences in public except to say it was great, and it probably was! But suffice it to say it's a lot of work behind the scenes for the agent, like finding all the houses for their shows and getting owners to agree to be on camera. But we are told it's a huge labor of love. There are small production companies throughout Los Angeles and Chicago, and NYC of course, that do the casting.

It seems the key to getting chosen/cast is all in the vdeo audition. Make it good, make it polished and do your best.  And some continual follow up never hurt.  Just like on a listing presentation, preparation and some sophistication is key.  And no stripes because they vibrate on camera.
