Therapy for House Hunters! - 08/15/10

At Open House Genie, we're regular people. We love real estate, cozy blankets, summer nights, dinner parties, good conversation, cats and dogs, the ocean and a million things more.  We also love anything interesting online that gets our attention. These are a few of our recent findings and standard favorites.

www.kiehls.com  We love this store.  But an insider's FYI: they are going to be dramatically cutting down on free samples.  If and when in San Francisco or NYC, check out the company's stunning store in person. There are Kiehl's locations all over the country now.  Their moisturizers are the best. This company does not test on animals.

www.davidburke.com Gourmet goes grand.  Chef David Burke's food products are luscious and luxurious and a little unusual (flavor sprays, anyone?). We particularly crave his pink Himalayan rock salt, $18 per pound. Used for flourish and presentation, grate a little over a piece of fish just before serving.

www.tooprecioustowear.org The true story of coral.  What it is, what it's best for (hint: not a ring) and education on preserving coral reefs around the world.

www.theblueproject.com  Learn a little more about reef and coral protection here.  Saving the ocean is not a trend.

www.designspongeonline.com  We think you're going to really like this one. The site has just been redesigned and is sometimes slow when we check in, but be patient and wait for it!  This is sort of a site, sort of a blog, by interior "stylists" to let you sneak peeks into cool apartments and lofts across the country.  Everything at your fingertips here gets the senses going.  We even like the ads on the right.

www.greenhomeguide.com A simple site with good Q & A on how to green your home.

www.pointclickhome.com Wow, another great home site.  Check out that farmhouse sink in the article "Kitchen with a Twist."   That's positively dreamy.

www.betterlivingthroughdesign.com If money was no object, we'd get ten bird feeders and a few bamboo shelves with those cool cubby holes for storing shoes.

www.fabprefab.com  When will prefab housing be accepted in San Diego?  About the same time the building code allows straw bale houses in San Diego, which should be now.  The tricky part about pre-fab is buying a lot you like in the city and then tearing down the house on the lot.  And then ordering a new prefab house for the lot.  This makes no economical sense in San Diego. But someday, boy someday, we want a prefab house open house tour on Open House Genie!  Followed very closely by a straw bale open house tour.

Quirky.  We love beet salad, preferably with goat cheese.  We're not in the restaurant recommending business, but we crave the beet salad -- eat it at the bar -- at Laurel in Bankers Hill. www.SDUrbanKitchen.com.  And we equally love the version at www.TheBondi.com down the Gaslamp. Free plugs for beet salad always.

Gus prefers shopping at Kiehl's because of their
150 year tradition of being kind to animals.
